The Ugandan Kids Choir delighted audiences around the United States for over a decade, with upbeat performances featuring authentic East African music, drumming, and dance, along with Christian Ugandan and American worship songs. Everywhere they went they put a smile on people’s faces, and a bounce in people’s step. As we look back on 13 years of tours, we wanted to share a few of our favorite memories of tours past.
1. So many firsts!
Tour life is filled with new experiences. Swimming is always a favorite with choir kids, but that wasn’t the only thing they got to experience here in the United States. They saw snow for the first time, tried their hand at baseball, took their first plane rides, tasted new foods, and so much more!
2. BIG Performances
The Choir danced their way across some very big stages! One tour performed at CenturyLink Field, opening for the Sounders, Seattle’s professional soccer team. Another tour even performed at Disneyland – the happiest place on earth!
3. Meeting Sponsors!
Perhaps the sweetest of all tour moments was meeting sponsors in person. Every child on the Ugandan Kids Choir is sponsored, and their tour routes often wound up crossing paths with their sponsors. The joy on those occasions was so fun to see.
4. Host Home Fun
As they traveled, the choir kids got to stay with families across the United States. Not only did host homes provide the kids a safe place to sleep while they were on the road, it gave them a close look at different walks of life, across America. Hosts also provided the kids with lots of new adventures! From ballet lessons to water slides, each host home did an incredible job of welcoming the kids into their own version of family fun.
5. Learning and Growing
The Choir kids grew so much on tour, and not just physically. (Although it did seem like every pair of pants we bought them was somehow too short a week later!) They grew mentally and spiritually as well. On tour, the kids had the opportunity to go on some great field trips including the Kennedy Space Center, local fire stations, zoos, and more. With full immersion, their English improved ten-fold, a skill that will serve them well, all of their lives. But most importantly, they also grew in their faith! At each performance, they were leading worship as they visited churches across the United States. They even studied scripture together and took turns leading Bible study.
The Ugandan Kids Choir met so many wonderful people and made so many beautiful memories on the road, we can’t recount them all here. What are some of your favorite Choir memories? We’d love to see your photos and recollections in the comments below!
