Double Christmas Blessings

Christmas will be here before you know it! If you’re like me – and many of our supporters – you have a big shopping list for people you’d like to bless this year…and that list can seem a little overwhelming.

This Christmas, you can give hope!

Thankfully, the 2017 Christmas Gift Catalog is here! And it’s here to help us all with our Christmas shopping! The catalog has more than 25 items that you can give to help a child or family in need. But did you know you can give those items “in honor” of one of your friends or loved ones?

Let’s take a look at how people just like you have used the catalog for double blessings!

Barbara lives in Wisconsin and has four grandkids ages 11 to 18. As they get older, their needs and wants get more complex, which makes Christmas shopping that much harder. But Grandma Barbara still wants to show them how much she loves them. So when she saw the catalog, she was so excited to see she could give gifts for the kids that would be gifts for someone else too!

Since she has four grandkids, Barbara decided to buy them a Coop O’ Chickens – one chicken each! They enjoyed getting something so unique and the kids’ mom was thrilled to introduce this element of “giving back” into the kids’ Christmas. After such success last year, Barbara is already planning for this year. This time she is going to give the kids the catalog and let them choose how they want to bless others!

In honor of her grandkids, Barbara gave a Coop O' Chickens so kids like Grace can have food and income!

One of our supporters from here in Bellingham takes this “in honor” idea even further. Nancy has 14 grandchildren to keep up with, so themed Christmas shopping is definitely the way to go! In recent years she has matched her theme to a catalog item. Last year she gave a Happy Feet Pak (new shoes and socks for kids in need) in honor of her grandkids. And to help them remember and connect with the difference being made in their name, she gave them each a pair of fun Christmas socks! The year before that she donated for clean water projects and gave each child their own water bottle (or sippy cup for the little ones!) One year she even made them all their own pillow cases to go with a “Good Night’s Sleep” gift.

Nancy gave all her grandkids their own water bottles...but she also gave clean water to children in need!

Perhaps the most exciting thing about in honor giving is the opportunity to share something you’re passionate about with those you love. I’ve experienced that joy myself. Last year, I gave a Girl’s Hygiene Pak in honor of my mom, and got to share with her how the work we are doing in places like Kenya and Uganda opens doors for girls to stay in school and build brighter futures for themselves. Honestly, I was little nervous about this gift. It’s very different from how our family usually does Christmas. But she loved it! We live in different states, so for her, that opportunity to share in my work was a fun way to feel a little closer. The commemorative magnet that comes with every in honor gift is still on her fridge. And you can bet she’s getting a new magnet this year!

Have you given in honor gifts? Let us know how it worked!
