Finding True Hope

At the young age of 11, Annette was already filled with despair. For her family, living in a poor area of Uganda, every day was a struggle to survive. The stress and worry of poverty was slowly overwhelming her.

A girl leans against a brick wall, smiling for the camera. Annette had no hopes or dreams that should could ever escape a life of poverty.

Her father was out of work. He’d searched for a job for as long as Annette could remember with no luck. Instead, the family had to rely her mother’s small wage. The money she earned was barely enough to feed them. There was nothing left over to send the children to school.

But one day, everything changed.

Annette was enrolled in our sponsorship program, and with the support of her sponsor she not only got to school, she got to start attending the local Life Center.

Through school, Annette started to break out of her despair. The hopelessness that had been weighing her down started to shift. She started to believe that her life could get better.

Then, the Life Center got to her. Every week she was hearing new Bible stories and engaging with the Gospel message. And every week she was learning about a new way to live. The teachers introduced her Christian Character traits like thankfulness, love and forgiveness.

For Annette, these lessons were life-changing. She says that one day after her Life Center meeting she “felt a heavy conviction in her heart.” And, leaning into that conviction, Annette gave her life to Jesus!

A girl plays a djembe, a type of large drum that originates from West Africa. Annette's life was completely changed at her Life Center.

That was three years ago, and today Annette is filled with hope! And her young faith is growing. We asked Annette what she’s seen Jesus do in her life, and she lit up. She told us about a day her mother was terribly sick. With no access to medical care, Annette was terrified that she’d lose her mother. With nowhere else to turn, she prayed for healing. And her mother recovered, praise God!

With the support of her sponsor, Annette still gets to go to school every day. She’s doing very well in her classes. Math is a struggle for her, but she’s working hard. And she’s still attending the Life Center every week. She says that her favorite character trait from her Life Center lessons is thankfulness. Where before she was scared and angry by how little her parents could give her, now she is choosing to be thankful instead.

With her back to the camera, a girl stands in front of a group of seated children all looking up at her as she holds an open Bible, presumably reading a passage out loud. Now, Annette loves sharing her faith and hope with others!

But the biggest transformation is simply her hope. Now, she has dreams! She wants to be a nurse when she grows up, because she wants to help people.

Praise God for kids like Annette. It is so exciting to see her transformed by grace, and see her dreaming of her bright future.
