From Farm to Pharmacy

Recently, I sat down with Justine, a young woman whose life was transformed thanks to the support of her sponsors. Her journey is proof of the impact you have every day as a child sponsor.

Justine grew up on a tiny farm in Kalangala, Uganda, an isolated island in Lake Victoria. Her family had a few goats, and survived on their milk and the few vegetables they grew in their garden. When Justine was just eight years old, her father died. The family’s already precarious financial situation became much worse without him.

With seven children to care for all on her own, Justine’s mom was desperate. Her sole goal was keeping all of them fed – there was no time or money to even think about keeping Justine and the others in school.

Thankfully, they found Childcare Worldwide!

Through sponsorship, Justine was able to continue her education! After finishing primary school, she was able to continue on to an excellent high school. And from there, she even went on to get a diploma in nursing!

I asked her what her life would look like today if she hadn’t been sponsored. Shaking her head, Justine told me she didn’t want to think about it. She went on to say that it would have been “miserable.” She would still be living in the small village where she grew up. She most likely would have married off by now, trapped in a life of poverty with no hope.

Contrast that to her new reality! After completing her nursing degree, she began working in a private clinic. After saving up her money, Justine opened a small pharmacy of her own. She loves working for herself. With a couple more years of experience, she will be able to update her license and expand the pharmacy into a full clinic!

Justine enjoys her work counseling people and helping them prevent illnesses. Eventually, she wants to specialize in midwifery. “I feel good when I help someone bring new life into the world,” she says.

Justine is so grateful for her sponsors. She says that it was inspiring knowing that there was someone investing in her education. Knowing that somebody cared gave her the encouragement she needed to keep working hard, and pushing herself to excel.

And just look how it paid off! Justine is thriving today, and looking forward to even greater things ahead. When you make the commitment to sponsor a child, you are giving them opportunities just like the ones that transformed Justine’s life!
