Ministry During a Global Lockdown May 14, 2020

If you listen to the news, it would seem that the only places affected by the pandemic are the US and Europe. We know that’s not true - here at Childcare Worldwide we can attest to the ravaging effects of Covid-19 in the rest of the world, particularly the countries we work in. The regular routine in our home offices has become a daily scan of news articles from Peru, Haiti, Kenya, Uganda, India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, bolstered by regular updates from our “stay at home” staff in those locations.  (more…)

Mosquito Monsters October 4, 2019

For something so small, they cause a lot of damage. In many parts of the world mosquitos are far more than just an annoying little bug. They are dangerous and even deadly. Why? Because mosquitos carry the malaria virus. Malaria is a big problem for developing countries, and it’s one we can’t afford to ignore. Here’s why: Sick kids can’t attend Life Centers. Our Life Centers offer children a space to meet Jesus and grow in their faith. But when kids get sick with malaria, they’re too weak to come their Life Centers, often for weeks or even months on end. That means no Bible lessons, no discipleship with their Life Center teachers, no new songs about Jesus, and no memory verses. (more…)

Against all Odds September 30, 2019

In Uganda, I recently met an amazing young woman. Her name is Allen, and despite so many challenges, she’s built a beautiful life for herself. Allen was born in a poor village in Uganda. She is also deaf. When her parents realized she couldn’t hear, they decided they didn’t want her. Thankfully, a kind neighbor woman who had no children of her own decided to take care of Allen. This neighbor is the only family Allen has. Her new mom was very poor. She could provide Allen with some food and a place to sleep, but not much else. As a young child, Allen communicated entirely by miming. There was no money for school or tutors who could unlock the world of sign language for her. (more…)

Twin Blessings September 23, 2019

At 31, Sarah is barely older than I am, but her life has been so different – and so much harder – than my own. She lives in Uganda and has 8 year-old twins, a boy and a girl, named Prosper and Patricia. Her story is a powerful demonstration of the difference the simple gift of food can make for a struggling family. Some people in Uganda believe that twins are bad luck. Sadly, Sarah’s husband couldn’t handle the fear of superstition, and was overwhelmed by the responsibilities of being a father. So, when the twins were still just babies, he threw them – and their mother – out of ‘his’ house. (more…)

"Welcome to Our Home" August 20, 2019

I’m sitting here in Entebbe, Uganda listing to the sound of traffic and muffled conversations in Luganda. For the past two weeks, I’ve been traveling around both Kenya and Uganda meeting the children and families Childcare Worldwide serves. It’s been an eye-opening and humbling experience. The families we serve are poor. And that’s clear when you see their mud houses with dirt floors, buzzing with flies. None of that surprised me – I knew their lives looked very different from my own. What did surprise me was the similarities I found between myself and these families. (more…)
